The culture of radiation protection is not very widespread, at least in Italy. This book provides all the essential and fundamental data useful to the dentist to put into practice the principles of radiation protection required by law.
Follow the rules laid down is not only a legal requirement, but should be mostly a matter of conscience. Radiation is harmful to health and each of us can, without sacrificing the useful information in daily clinical practice, contributing to the reduction in health detriment due to their use. The principle of justification and the principle of optimization should be applied daily and reading this book helps to take additional reasons for their respect. In addition to explanatory tables are provided bibliographic data and links to sites specialized in providing insight into the topic.
The law and conscience
A small example of how the application of the law alone is not sufficient to reduce the radiation in the dental practice.
The European Commission Radiation Protection in volume 136, year 2004, published European guidelines on radiation protection in dental radiology.
Here it is stated that if we use an intraoral X-ray machine with a rectangular collimator 30X40 mm collimator instead of a round, we can reduce radiation by 50%! Most intraoral radiography equipment sold are equipped with collimators are perfectly round and under! So is the conscience of the individual dentist to decide whether to keep or change the collimator.
The law does not require that!
